Sandy King – No Words (2024)
With over 25 years of experience as a singer-songwriter, Sandy King is an internationally recognised name on the US (and beyond) music scene. Recording as lead vocalist for various bands across genres, King traverses several styles with elegant ease. While I’m probably really late to the party, the veteran musician began releasing solo material in 2021, according to Spotify. Then again, this is my introduction to the songstress and I’m guessing her talent entertained the masses for several years before. The latest addition to the discography is the single ‘No Words’.
Following her critically acclaimed EP, Play, in 2021, King strolls into 2024 with ‘No Words’. Known for her genre-diverse versatility, she dips into various flavours from rock, pop, folk and indie; however, her style constantly evolves as is heard in ‘No Words’. While a strong country influence remains, the single leans further toward an indie-pop sound with hints of indie-rock clinging to the sides.
Listening to King’s music is more than merely an enjoyable song through the speakers, its vivid imagery and intense emotion immerses you in the music. Toppling into a sonic whirlpool, the crashing drums and roaring guitar slice across thundering in your head. Heavier and heavier, a tug of rock drags you down; however, slips of piano hold you up above the vortex. Just as you become lost in the insanity, King’s vocals embrace you with surety, confidence, and comfort. Interestingly, while King caresses you in a warm hug, vulnerability and fragility ooze from each chord.
Penned as the theme song for heated arguments, King uses ‘No Words’ to capture the pain, frustration, anger, hurt and ferocity of being unheard. Speaking to the sensitive subject matter, King notes, “People disagree. Argue. Both sides can walk away feeling unheard, and empty, almost to the point of verbal abuse. At that point, there are no words that make it better…”
Personal, intimate and raging with confined chaos, Sandy King finds the delicate line between fragility and over-powering ferocity in ‘No Words’.
In addition to this single, Sandy King released an official lyric video for ‘No Words’. You can view the video below or on her YouTube channel.
