San Quentin – You Got Some Nerve (2022)

In 2019, UK-based songwriter Liam Cass and singer Owen Eves got together with bassist Nick Keep and drummer Luke Johns to begin the formation of an alt-rock/indie-rock sensation. Add the skills of guitarist Dan Ridgwell in 2020 and the group San Quentin was born. Despite having only a few singles to their name, the lads are turning heads from international press like Thoughts Words Actions, Find No Enemy, RAMzine, Gig Slutz, Metal Jacket Magazine, Metal Shock Finland and BBC Radio. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘You Got Some Nerve’.

Hot on the heels of their single ‘Hurricane’, British quintet San Quentin adopt an old-school Britpop meets indie-rock sound in their new track ‘You Got Some Nerve’. An Oasis meets The Rolling Stones attitude, but with a contemporary element of The Verve in the mix, the lads bring modern-day edginess to iconic sounds of yesteryear. I find this particularly interesting as San Quentin tosses you into a complex fusion of rock-inspired music; however, retains a raw simplicity in the elegant rock melody. Gentle but harsh, raw but soft, gruff but smooth – ‘You Got Some Nerve’ hits all those proverbial nails right on the head.

Alright, I know I have made a few comparisons to iconic bands like Oasis and The Rolling Stones, but San Quentin has an iconic quality about their sound. While the melodic arrangement is a harmonic swirl of instrumentation, each player brings a real oomph with pounding drums, powerful drums and a sensational gruffness in Eves’s obscure vocals. The richness seems to create a palpable grittiness that intoxicates listeners from beginning to end.

“This song was inspired by a conversation with a friend. They were saying modern-day romance is like a Mexican standoff. The first to reply is the first to be done…the riffs are all fast-paced and spaced out to create that tension…” – Liam Cass on ‘You Got Some Nerve’.
