Samantha Gibb – Sorry, Not Sorry (2022)
The daughter of legendary musician Maurice Gibb, singer-songwriter Samantha Gibb has musical talent flowing through her veins. Born and bred in Florida, but now residing in Nashville, Tennessee, Gibb has been recording and writing for herself and others for almost two decades following her father’s passing in 2004. This is my introduction to Samantha Gibb, but she has been turning heads across the globe for some time. Featured on indie music blogs like New Music Weekly, Music Crowns, The Real Ding and various playlists, Gibb is becoming a name on many people’s tongues. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Sorry, Not Sorry’.
Following her song ‘Good Lovin’, Gibb merges elements of indie-pop and pop-rock in the cinematic ‘Sorry, Not Sorry’. Soothing, laidback and gentle, there is a smooth flow to the track. Yet, while the charming melody effortlessly sets you adrift on a whimsical sonic river wrapped in a comfortable blanket, there is a deeper meaning to the single. She explains that ‘Sorry, Not Sorry’ is “a song about growing up and growing apart from a relationship that might not have been good for you…”. Interestingly enough, while one part of the song has a melancholic lilt, the tumultuous waves beneath the sonic river are positive and jovial.
Just as Gibb shares that the new single is “about growing up and growing apart”, its melodic arrangement really oozes empowerment. The synth-driven melody has a hazy vibe; however, it is Gibb’s vocals that bring the powerful, optimistic theme to the fore. Bold and rich, her dulcet tones elegantly express the strength behind vulnerability. She shares that the track is personally about the relationship she has with her hometown of Miami Beach; but she also hopes that people translate the message behind the melody in their own way feeling that “although we don’t necessarily make the best choices, we can always make better ones.”
