Sam and the Sea – Evil Ghosts (2023)

Hailing from the USA, singer-songwriter, producer and visual artist Sam and the Sea has a sound that has been described as “atmospheric” (The Wild Is Calling), “intimate” (Music For All), and “enticing” (Sinusoidal Music). From their well-received debut single ‘The Light’ in 2020 to their European tour in 2021 and the critically acclaimed track ‘Horses’ in 2022, Sam and the Sea has been garnering a loyal following across the globe. The latest addition to their discography is the EP Evil Ghosts. Come with us as we take a listen to it.

Following the single ‘Horses’, Sam and the Sea release their four-track EP Evil Ghosts. One element I love about Evil Ghosts is how it seems to take you along a journey on a sonic ocean. Opening with the title track, you are introduced to the steady waves of the ocean and teeter into the sea with a joyful smile. ‘Canada’ takes you further out softly floating on the glistening water; however, you hit a rough patch with ‘Horses’. Showing the turbulent waves beneath, ‘Horses’ has a heavier sensation with stern beats underlying the dreamy psychedelia. Finally, ‘…In Waves’ smooths things with its pop ballad although it does leave you with the message: “don’t mess with the ocean – 0even if it is a sonic one”.

While Sam and the Sea have a signature dreaminess to their sound, I find Evil Ghosts portrays diversity within the flowing ambience. Moving from post-punk to synth-pop, alternative pop to something with a retro psychedelic tone, Sam and the Sea constantly have you shifting along a kaleidoscopic whirlpool. Interestingly enough, it is this wistfulness that creates a simultaneous sense of intimate vulnerability with bold confidence.

“The EP opens with a ship’s horn blasting and the sound of gentle waves and from there on every sound, every word is a memory, a chronicle of a life often lived reluctantly…Musically, the tracks share a similar sonic vision with simple yet detailed textures designed to introduce the mood of each song and provide a frame for poignant lyrics.”– Sam and the Sea on Evil Ghosts
