SALT – I Hate You All (2024)
Not really giving a stuff about societal expectations, perceptions, stereotypes, and whether they’re cool or not, Scottish group SALT redefines the word “cool” with intricate, intense, emotional music. Bonding over a raw desire to “write great tunes that means stuff”, Sharon Woods (vocals), Robin Woods (guitars), Simon Kettles (bass) and James King (drums) skip across musical genres dabbing their hands into everything and bringing unconventional diversity to our ears. This isn’t our introduction to the UK-based band having discovered SALT in 2022 with ‘Tumbleweed’; however, with each track passing our ears it feels we have something entirely new to experience. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘I Hate You All’.
In a world filled with uncertainty, confusion, anger and tragedy, it’s rather easy to wake up and feel upset about reality. Of course, there are good bits to life like a soothing cup of tea igniting feelings of comfort, warmth and blissful relief… but that’s not quite the inspiration for SALT’s ‘I Hate You All’. Built on a situation of bullying and the consequential implications, ‘I Hate You All’ delves into the grittiness of feeling attacked. Robin Woods explains:
“It [‘I Hate You All’] is about abusive behaviour that we experienced from a bunch of neds (look it up) getting off a train at Edinburgh’s Waverley train station aimed at our non-binary trans child.”
Self-recorded and produced at the Woods’ home studio, with King’s drums recorded at Banana Row Studios, ‘I Hate You All’ is a kick in the guts rush of rock. Crashing drums match scorching guitars with a bold bass pulsating beneath, all merging in harmonic chaos. The instrumentation captures head-spinning insanity, but it is Sharon Woods’ vocals that hit you between the eyes. Yet, while this ball of hard rock meets punk madness twirls about, vulnerability slivers across with a veiled flutter of raw relief bringing all that fury to the surface.
