Salsola – The Seekers (2021)

With their last release ‘Deconstruction’, Salsola wrapped us in their musical innovation paired with gritty vocals and captivating instrumentation. Now, their follow-up release ‘The Seekers’ looks to push their musical boundaries even further if that is possible. Keeping their signature guitar hooks, they pack catchy melodies into intense atmospherics to push listeners to the conclusion of the single.

While the pandemic kept the band busy, they have been hard at work innovating and reconstructing what is possible through their sound. Between performing live streams for the Georgian Theatre and BBC introducing, they set about recording this single. If you were as mesmerised by their last release as we were, then this latest single is going to absolutely blow your mind.

‘The Seekers’ flies into your senses with a rather epic guitar line. The rapid rise of the guitar line dips into a gentle glide of drums with the guitars lifting the wings of the track like currents of air. The soundscape has a wonderfully expansive atmospheric feeling that opens before you like a wide horizon. With the melody using a rise and fall through the verses and chorus, you are effortlessly led on the journey of the track. The twining of the instrumentation throughout the single is amazing and forms a solid current that draws you under the band’s spell. There is a flying spiral of guitars later in the track that is utterly wonderful and worth waiting for.

While the melody has you soaring on air currents, Vicky Wright’s vocals shine on you like the gentle spring sun. There is a really uplifting feeling to her performance, particularly on the chorus. Some of the grittiness of their last single has been dropped for a more melodic movement. As she lifts your spirits on the chorus, the verses have a tinge of melancholy that adds a poignancy to the emotions of the chorus. There is a feeling of connection and affection throughout the single that sinks into your chest and sticks with you long after the song has ended.

Salsola has you riding the air currents of their music with the soaring atmospherics and emotive vocals of ‘The Seekers’. The music picks you up and leaves you gliding on gentle pockets of air before spiralling into the enthralling guitar riffs. As you soar, the vocals shine a warmth tinged with melancholy onto your skin.
