Salsola – Heartbreaker (2022)

Described by Narc Magazine as blurring the lines between genres, UK-based band Salsola has a unique, diverse sound to share with audiences. A four-piece indie-pop from Teesside, the lads and lady have a strong presence in their local scene; however, it is not only England and the UK that are singing their praises. Featuring in Earthly Pleasures Blog, FV Music Blog, Crack Magazine, Spotlight Music and many playlists, Salsola is turning heads on a global scale. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Heartbreaker’.

Following the critically acclaimed single ‘Disappearing’, Salsola adopt a smoother, more soothing and laidback style in ‘Heartbreaker’. Merging elements of jazz, soul and pop, there is slick obscurity to the new song. What I find particularly interesting is how they add drag us back to the jazz sounds of the 1980s with the smooth guitar and heavy drums. I must admit that the incorporation of both a heavier, hard rock meets blues-inspired guitar added a rougher edge to a melody that is, to me at least, reminiscent of old-school George Benson. I grew up with music from the 70s, 80s and 90s, and ‘Heartbreaker’ fits in nicely with my nostalgic playlist.

Just as the melody has groovy vibes, the softer female vocals get you nodding along with a tinge of sensuality. I’m not saying the dulcet tones are reminiscent of Sade or anything, but a sexy aura oozes from the lead vocalist. Not cheeky grins and raised eyebrows flirtation, but a softer, more intense sensuality that leaves one speechless.

Charming, intoxicating and highly sophisticated, Salsola shows innovativeness in their elegant ‘Heartbreaker’. I cannot wait for more from this talented group.
