Sally Wolfdreamer – You, Me and the Ravine (2021)

Following two EP releases last year, Sally Wolfdreamer is back with ‘You, Me and the Ravine’. Swirling with glitchy tones and ambient waves, the single is a slow build to a wonderfully epic climax. Using analogue equipment without any sample packs, the dark wave tones showcase the variety of sound Sally Wolfdreamer is capable of.

Written over two sleepless nights, the music really speaks for itself while carrying the tones that have become a staple for James Mitchell’s solo project. While he started his musical journey as a drummer in various bands, he has always dabbled in electronic sounds. With this musical project, he is unleashing his passion for electronics on the world while fusing all his musical influences.

‘You, Me and the Ravine’ bubbles to life and really grabs your attention with the roiling tones of the synths. There is a great feeling to the opening that draws you close with an almost ominous feeling that grips your heart. You have no idea where the music will lead you and this makes it even more enjoyable. As you listen to the synths roll and bubble over each other, a deep drone starts to rise from the depths. This adds to the somewhat ominous feeling of the music.

As that droning tone gains ground in the soundscape, the feeling of the single starts to change. The movement of the synths gets a heavier glitch feeling with some vocals tittering through from the back of the sound. The movement of the music is a really epic story told through the synths that burst into an electronic wonder in the latter parts of the song. There is a rising of lights that hits as the single moves toward the climax. A touch of dance hits the melody while there is a calling out the rides the middle layers.

Sally Wolfdreamer takes you on a slow journey through the synths and pulses of ‘You, Me and the Ravine’. The music draws you close and takes you through some rather ominous feelings. There is an unknown element to the track that leaves you guessing what will happen and reeling in wonder once it hits.
