Sally Mango – Love Inventory (2024)

Easy listening indie-funk is fairly new to me but, when done as well as Northern Californian collective Sally Mango, I couldn’t help but stand up and take notice. Their sound epitomises the feeling I get when imagining walking the sunny streets of the San Francisco Bay area.

‘Love Inventory’ is a wonderful exploration of fledging love and all the excitement that comes with it, even if it’s short-lived. I enjoyed the band’s description of the track: “the song is about meeting someone and feeling the spark, but being burned before you have a ‘love inventory’, where you check the signs and maps to make sure you’re still on the right track”. It has placed the term “love inventory” firmly in my vocabulary since it’s a very unique way to look at relationships and the self-guidance we all need sometimes.

Musically faultless, ‘Love Inventory’ has a composition which takes all the best elements of jazz and funk, that on its own would have had me hooked, but Zia GV’s vocals come in and bring it to levels far beyond what I expected. With a smooth yet powerful voice, Zia truly just elevates this track to another level, especially with the hook “I could fall in love with you”, which is not only catchy but relatable for anyone who has felt that spark when meeting someone for the first time.

My next action after listening to ‘Love Inventory’ will be to get my teeth into Homemade and everything that came before. Bands like Sally Mango are the reason I love reviewing music, this is a genre I’d never actively seek out, but now I’ve got another world to explore and my “Fans also like” list on Spotify will be getting rinsed in the coming days.
