Saint Mars – Ocean Blues (2020)

Saint Mars is an indie-pop synth-wave collective currently fronted by American prodigy Tryzdin and including talented musicians from across the UK, US and Switzerland. With founding members Marc Darcange, Angelo Bruschini and Britt Warner the band has been amazing listeners since 2016. Now they have released a rework of their first-ever track ‘Ocean Blues’.

The song addresses the topic of bullying and comes from their upcoming album Boys Never Cry. The rework gives this song a completely new spin and places it firmly in the band’s distinctive sound. The accompanying music video takes the topic a step further.

‘Ocean Blues’ draws you in with a light but driving melodic opening. There is something tense in the notes of the melody while being tinged with a sad acceptance. The melody is not the main focus of this song, but it does create this amazing base for Tryzdin’s vocals.

While Tryzdin is young, he is able to imbue intense emotions into his performance. His vocals transform this song into something more than it started out as and transcends the original aesthetics. His performance is also perfectly controlled and a pleasure to listen to.

The music video for the song is also worth a watch. It is an artful depiction of the effects of bullying which are hidden from view. The video was created with French directors Romain Bedouet and Julia Bois and is a chilling visual for the intense lyrics of the song. However, there is a moment of light in the video and song that lets you know that light will outshine the darkness of this topic.

Saint Mars leaves you with goosebumps with ‘Ocean Blues’ featuring Tryzdin. The song is an intense and emotive rework of their first single. There is something tense threaded through the music, vocals and video that make the song absolutely beautiful.
