Sail Cassady – Hiding In Vancouver (2023)

Featured in notable press such as Plastic Magazine, Roadie Music, Sinusoidal Magazine, Euro Indie Music, York Calling and The Buzzrpod, Sail Cassady is turning heads across the globe. Unafraid to explore provocative themes, the Canadian seven-piece touch on issues like mental health, sexuality, identity crisis and consciousness. As a “queer-friendly U2 with a dash of the Pogues, Sail Cassady’s songs document the torture and delights of the artists own gruelling process of self-discovery…”. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Hiding In Vancouver’.

Following the well-received track ‘Old Green House’, Sail Cassady marched into 2023 with their acoustic soul-rock ballad ‘Hiding In Vancouver’. The first release in two years, ‘Hiding In Vancouver’ is a mellifluous rock melody infused with strands of soul and jazz in the arrangement. A soothing combination of piano, guitars and drums, there is a simplistic but simultaneously kaleidoscopic quality to the melody. Yet, while the soft melody is enchanting in itself, it is the lead vocals that take ‘Hiding In Vancouver’ to another level. Rich and warm, there is an almost Marvin Gaye soulfulness in Colin Craveiro’s dulcet tones with the underlying instrumentation leaning toward old-school Motown.

As I mentioned, Sail Cassady is not afraid to approach provocative themes in their music and this is clear in ‘Hiding In Vancouver’. Poetic and romantic with a Leonard Cohen-esque intimacy, the single explores human vulnerability with a yearning to return to the place where you feel happiest. Colin Craveiro shares that he “…wrote ‘Hiding In Vancouver’ two and something years ago with the hopes of capturing that feeling Vancouver has for me. From self-discovery to love, passion and loss…I’ve always returned with a new layer peeled back revealing who I really am.”

Sincere, sentimental and passionate, ‘Hiding In Vancouver’ is the first of a string of LGBTQ2S-centric to be released throughout 2023.
