Sabine – How Do You Sleep at Night (2021)

Taking a step away from her usual soulful ballads, Sabine is hitting out with a more up-tempo sound in ‘How Do You Sleep at Night’. With some outstanding electric guitars and a cameo by a viola, she fills you with a tense yet upbeat sound. All of this is neatly tied together with her powerful vocals for a new take that will steal your breath away.

Her usual chilled pop sound led to her performing at the O2 Academy Islington and headlining a set at The Camden Chapel in 2019. With trips across the pond, she performed in Texas and worked in Nashville on some upcoming collaborations. While she is bringing a change of sound to our ears with this release, she continues to encompass everything that fans have come to love.

‘How Do You Sleep at Night’ draws you in with a loping guitar line. There is a folk-country feeling to the music that harks back to Sabine’s previous releases. However, there is a faster tempo to the music that picks up as the chorus hits. This brings a splash of electric guitars that have you soaring into the lyrics and vocals. The chorus also has your feet tapping to the beat and your head moving to the rhythm. Later in the track, the viola makes an appearance before you are swept up into a really great guitar riff.

The loping acoustic guitar of the opening is complemented by Sabine’s whispered entry. Her vocals have a light rasp to them that offers an intriguing power. When the music splashes out on the chorus, her performance matches it before dipping into some deep questioning. Through the verses, her performance builds the tension of the track while the lyrics build a simmering scene. When this comes to a head on the chorus, you feel the urge to sing along with her as she confronts someone who has treated her badly.

Sabine turns to a more up-tempo sound to call out the wrongs in a relationship while getting you lost in the building tension of the melody in ‘How Do You Sleep at Night’. The melody combines with the vocals to build the tension of the verses only to break out on the chorus. The splash of instrumentation and confrontation in the lyrics create a catchy chorus that you may find yourself singing along to.
