Ryan Terrigno – Stare At The Sun (2023)

Despite having only three singles to his name (or at least streaming on his Spotify), singer-songwriter Ryna Terrigno can be considered a music veteran. The US-based musician began playing music at age 13, songwriting at age 16 and spent the first 12 years of his career fronting rock bands Wester and We Are The Arsenal. As part of these groups, Terrigno has performed across the USA and Japan playing on the Vans Warped Tour festival and opening for notable acts like Senses Fail and Hawthorne Heights. A decade after his band dissolved in 2013, Terrigno re-emerges as a solo artist with three singles and an upcoming album.

Following his well-received singles ‘Get Lost’ and ‘I Can Still Break Your Heart’, ‘Stare At The Sun’ is the third track from his upcoming full-length album Alive & Well. Produced by industry veteran Alex Dezen and mastered by Whynot Jansveld, Alive & Well is a mishmash of genres from folk to alternative rock showcasing Terrigno’s diversity. One of the more unique tracks, as it was co-written with Dezen, ‘Stare At The Sun’ is a tender reflection of loss wrapped in a pop-rock sonic wrapper.

Tipping his hat at the pop-rock sounds of the 1990s and 2000s, ‘Stare At The Sun’ has a nostalgic vibe dragging me back to my youth. Toe-tapping, smile-inducing and cheery, you can find yourself twirling about with a refreshing breath of whimsy when listening to ‘Stare At The Sun’. The moving guitar and drums create a sonic bubble of happiness. Yet, given the poignant theme, the single oscillates between the prettiness of the arrangement and the desperation of the lyrics.

Ryan Terrigno shares that ‘Stare At The Sun’ “was one of those songs that I didn’t mean to write and one that turned out to be far catchier than it has any business to be in that it’s about losing a family member…”. Whimsical and kaleidoscopic, it is easy to be lured into the bright lights of a warm embrace; however, the matter-of-fact lyricism strips the song to its bones like ripping a band-aid off. Terrigno further shares, “…we made a conscious effort in the studio to not beat around the bush when it came to the lyrics… the verses of the song clearly outline the events of the tragic day we lost a member of our family, and the choruses express my personal feelings…”

Sincere, tender, honest and insightful, Ryan Terrigno explores human fragility and vulnerability in his new single ‘Stare At The Sun’.
