Rusty Reid – Our Love’s With You (2023)
Growing up in a household filled with music, singer-songwriter Rusty Reid got the music bug at a young age. His mother was constantly playing records but one day in 1964, she came home with a new album, Meet The Beatles; that was the bug that planted a music egg in Reid’s brain determined to be a musician. After childhood piano lessons, Reid switched to the guitar and found passion in the strings. At age 19, after three semesters at the University of Houston, Rusty Reid packed his bags and head for Nashville to pursue his dreams. A lucky rarity, he found quick initial success signed as a songwriter for Peer-Southern Music Publishing and recorded songs in the RCA Studios. It all sounds fab, doesn’t it? It didn’t last.
Skip ahead several years following a job at a gas station where he met Paul Newman to enjoying the world of a high-powered sports journalist, Rusty Reid reached the typical “American Dream”; but the music bug stuck. Jump ahead a few more years and Reid became disenchanted with his career in sports, took a leave of absence to travel the world in the early 90s and came with the desire to make music. In the early 2000s, he was eager to make music but felt his boat had sailed considering his age. Now, he proves that age doesn’t mean a damned thing by releasing critically acclaimed singles and albums.
Alright, brief bio over, let’s get to the meat of this review – ‘Our Love’s With You’.
Taken from his 2023 album Bayou Line, ‘Our Love’s With You’ blends the soothing charm of folk with the rugged intimacy of rock beneath. While there is an originality in Reid’s music, a nostalgic flair takes me back to the 60s and 70s with hints of the Beatles flitting through the melody. A simplistic harmony of Reid’s guitar and Jed Demlow’s keyboard, ‘Our Love’s With You’ has a mellifluous flow with an elegant gentleness.
As you listen to the melody, you are sent adrift on a whimsical, wistful sonic river; however, it is the heartfelt lyricism that touches the soul. Poetic and tender, Reid’s warm vocals caress the delicate lyrics bringing intimacy and cheer to his sound. A personal track, Reid captures the moving connection between family in ‘Our Love’s With You’. He explains that he wrote ‘Our Love’s With You’ “for my younger sister upon her graduation from high school and leaving for college…” Did she have the same spontaneous streak as her brother? No idea but we hope she followed his example and strove to fulfil her passion in life.
