Roxy Rawson – Running Up That Hill (2022)
Described as “an artist headed for greatness” (Music News), “…her sound is…incomparable” (Drunken Werewolf), and “…the UK’s answer to Regina Spektor” (God Is In The TV), singer-songwriter Roxy Rawson has a unique sound to enchant audiences across the globe. Hailing from the UK, Rawson strived to be as creative as possible incorporating diverse cultures into her music. From her training as a classical violinist and pianist in Paris to her teaching experience around Rwanda, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rawson had a great deal to fuse into an inimitable style. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Running Up That Hill’.
Following the well-received album Quenching The Kill, Rawson’s single ‘Running Up That Hill’ is her first release in four years. With a spine-chilling ethereal melody, Rawson sends shivers down your arms in this latest song. Retaining a contemporary pop style, the talented musician appeals to modern-day pop audiences; however, an obscurity exists bringing in a haunting indie-folk sentiment. Showcasing her broad vocal range, Roxy Rawson hits soprano highs with dips into alto tones enhancing the sonic rollercoaster ride.
Despite the trills and whimsical electronic backing, ‘Running Up That Hill’ remains a simplistic ballad – it merely has some haziness, whimsy and all-encompassing sonic fog. It is interesting as the simplistic ballad is kaleidoscopic, but also captures Rawson’s vulnerability in a stripped-back sound. Moreover, the powerful track gives a feeling of delicate fragility while the lyricism is a cathartic tune of empowerment, hope and solace. Gentle but delicate, smooth but haunting, and whimsical but profound, ‘Running Up That Hill’ is a melting pot of themes in a masterful melody.
“Growing up with Mormonism gave me a troubled perception of God in an environment of pressurised purity. I chose to cover this song because it was a cathartic way to have a dialogue with God. When I create music I’m trying to use the experience to heal open wounds and celebrate feelings so their energy can be transmuted.” – Roxy Rawson on ‘Running Up That Hill’
