Rose City Cinema – Strange Chemistry (2022)
Influenced by the likes of New Order, Depeche Mode, Incubus and Muse, US-based Rose City Cinema brings the best of the 80s to modern-day audiences. Formed approximately five years ago when Ian Stahl (vocals and guitar) and Eric DeLuca (bass) recruited Jason Fragoso (drums) and Janzie (keys), the lads have been turning heads across the globe. Performing at notable venues like the Viper Room and The Troubadour, festivals like the Save Our Sea Festival, and featuring on numerous blogs like Pop Fad Music and Sinusoidal Music, they have gained a reputation for energetic, engaging music. The latest addition to their discography is ‘Strange Chemistry’.
Originally playing under the moniker Cilience, the quartet had a unique alternative rock sound; however, they chose to change the band name to Rose City Cinema honing a more obscure style. Following their well-received track ‘Manhattan Pier’, described by Find No Enemy as having a “…sleeky modern feel alongside an otherwise nostalgic sheen that harkens back to the nineties”, ‘Strange Chemistry’ brings a bolder, richer and more “in your face” sound.
Harmoniously layering pounding drums, dynamic guitars and gritty synths, ‘Strange Chemistry’ has a strong alternative rock vibe; however, the incorporation of electronic production makes the single more danceable and eclectic. Finding the delicate line between typical rock and EDM, ‘Strange Chemistry’ showcases an edginess in the music. I must admit there is a nostalgic leaning toward the 80s new wave sound but with a contemporary alternative meets indie-rock quality. The representatives of old-school rock new wave in modern-day music, Rose City Cinema have a revolutionary vibe to its music.
While the intriguing arrangement of ‘Strange Chemistry’ is enough to keep you enthralled, it is the theme that demonstrates Rose City Cinema’s depth. Ian Stahl explains that the track “pushed us to dig deeper lyrically and instrumentally…the lyrics explore a relationship so powerful it’s almost weird. Often, we hear singers searching for that special someone, this song explores the moment you realise you’ve got them and your brain just can’t handle that yet.”
Tossing you into an intoxicating whirlpool of kaleidoscopic sound, ‘Strange Chemistry’ grabs your lungs, squeezes and makes you feel that weirdness when “…your brain just can’t handle it.” This is my introduction to Rose City Cinema, and I am completely overwhelmed by their natural talent. I cannot wait for more from this talented group.
