RORO and snapir – Colors Left (2025)
I love a good collaboration, they always seem to tap in a different layer of creativity and when they work you get something truly special. I’m confident in saying this is one of those times. RORO and their fellow Finn Snapir have joined forces and created a fantastic work of art with Colors Left. These Booa Music label mates have both brought their individual sounds through the piece but without overshadowing the other, which is no mean feat when it comes to balancing styles and giving up creative control.
The record’s opener ‘Tehran Jewel’ sets the tone for the entire album. With a solid beat, it keeps you tapping along whilst allowing the experimental sound to shine through. It is somehow ethereal and yet holds a dance beat to keep you from just drifting off. Followed swiftly by the lead single from EP ‘Mass’, it keeps with the same transcendental vibes that create a sound that is somewhat mindful. It urges you to get lost in it and honestly by the end of it, I felt compelled to go back and listen again, to soak it all in. This for me is what this genre is about, I get the feeling listening to RORO and snapir that I did the first time I listened to Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross and their soundtrack to The Social Network, which is high praise from me as that sits as one of my all-time favourite records.
As I carried on through the album, I enjoyed the break brought by ‘What After’. It was an intelligently placed track of simple white noise, I think it was a bold but successful mood to bring the listeners’ mind back to the music. This tactic worked perfectly, as the next track ‘Fractures’ hit differently to the rest of the album. It really showcased what RORO and snapir had promised with was “between dark electro, ambient, and glitch-infused soundscapes”.
Following ‘Fractures’ comes the title track and for me the best track on the album Colors Left. Having watched a lot of Nordic noir dramas, I couldn’t help but think this would fit perfectly soundtracking some grizzly murder surrounded by snow. With ‘Colors Left’, the whole arrangement of the track was tight, it all interlinked perfectly like an expertly woven tapestry of beats. They definitely left the best until last and a closing track with such gravitas leaves the album firmly imprinted in your mind.
Colors Left is an album which I can see myself listening to many times over and discovering something new to love every time. It is a wonderful collaboration by two incredible artists and the icing on the cake is I’ve got two new acts to delve into their back catalogue and I’ll be checking out more members of the Booa Music soon after. This record has left me wanting to explore the Finnish electronic music scene.
