Roots Asylum – Golden Hearts (2023)

From Music For All and The Hollywood Digest to IndieShark and iHeart Radio, rock band Roots Asylum is turning heads and garnering a following across the globe. Formed by a group of friends with the aim of creating original music, the US-based six-piece draw together elements of Americana, soft rock, folk rock and country. Since their debut release was in 2019, the lads are not necessarily newbies in a pool of sonic sharks; however, an innocence exists in their music that adds a tender rawness to the sound. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Golden Hearts’.

Following their festive single ‘Christmas Sucks’, ‘Golden Hearts’ is a fusion of folk and country within a delicate sonic package. Reminiscent of Roy Orbison with the intimate intensity of The Everly Brothers, but encapsulated in a laidback, toe-tapping tune similar to Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’, ‘Golden Hearts’ has an anthemic and timeless quality. It is soft and gentle, but with a tender poignancy woven into the arrangement and the lyricism.

What I find intriguing about Roots Asylum and ‘Golden Hearts’ is not the charming guitar-driven tune. It is not the appealing dulcet vocals in a wistful harmony of sound. No, it is the way the theme is both profound and light-hearted. Roots Asylum explain that ‘Golden Hearts’ “…starts with the lyric “I know we’re over now” and that sentiment continues throughout the song. None of us get through life without experiencing the loss of a good friend. This song takes you back to the moments in your life you spent with your friend, the joy and the struggle. It gives the listener something special to recall about that person who is still in our hearts.”

Sincere, sentimental and heartwarmingly honest, Roots Asylum shares their anthemic masterpiece, ‘Golden Hearts’.
