Roos Meijer – I Dream of a World (2021)

With her single ‘In My Name’, Roos Meijer took on injustice and filled listeners with the urge to stand up for what is right. This is something she continues with her latest single ‘I Dream of a World’. Inspired by a conversation with Zaire Kreiger, a spoken-word artist, anti-racism activity, feminist and law graduate, the single looks at perseverance, faith, activism and intersectionality.

Set to the alt-folk tones of Meijer’s sound, the single is a tantalising taster for her debut album Why Don’t We Give It A Try?. Each track draws on a conversation with a changemaker and inspires listeners to take on the injustices of the world. Telling extraordinary stories about inspiring people, Meijer bridges worlds and sounds to carefully craft an infectious sound.

‘I Dream of a World’ opens with some toe-tapping rock beats that have you rolling into the soundscape. There is a forward movement to the drums that pull you endlessly forward which is wonderful when combined with the vocals. Resting over the drums is a lilting melodic line that sways in the breeze and dances across the beats. The layering of the melody has been artfully handled so each line complements the others. The horns trill with a dancing vibe that makes you want to move with it while it tickles your brain.

The melody pulls you into the soundscape and keeps you moving through it, but it is the vocals that really make the song. Meijer’s vocals have an earthy feeling that ground you as you walk the path the melody lays out for you. As you listen to the lyrics, you are gently filled with a dream of something better and the need to contribute to this brighter future. There is a defiance in the chanting tones of the chorus that wisps into the understanding of the later parts of the track.

Roos Meijer fills you with a gentle defiance and the will to change the world through the layered sound of ‘I Dream of a World’. The melody has an endless forward momentum that matches the pull of the lyrics to make the world a better place. Meijer’s vocals are smooth and dancing as they swirl into your senses and fill you with the need to change the bad in the world.
