Track of the Day: Roos – Dunkelheit

Already a veteran musician, Roos has been on the Berlin music scene for ages originally as part of Stronzige Mission in 1996. While the crew gained a cult following in Germany, it was dissolved approximately a decade later but still remains part of Roos’ musical foundation. Remaining active in the industry, Roos used his songwriting skills to write for other artists, however, he is now embracing his solo project. We introduce you to Germany-based rap artist Roos with his debut single ‘Dunkelheit’.

Technically, we often do not cover rap or hip-hop music, but I felt Roos should be featured on The Other Side Reviews. It is not the hip-hop beats or rap elements that move me but rather the musical diversity in ‘Dunkelheit’. Instead of a beatbox-filled single, ‘Dunkelheit’ melds post-punk, alternative rock and melodic metal in a rap-rock bubble. A forceful combination of drums, guitars and underlying piano makes the track hard-hitting with hints of intimacy.

What I find intriguing about Roos and ‘Dunkelheit’ is how the melody conveys dark, gritty and painful emotions despite the lyrics being in German (a language I don’t understand). Roos’ ability to overcome cultural boundaries making listeners understand the core theme rather than the actual words is astounding. Not only that, he appeals to fans of different genres introducing them to something new and exciting. It’s safe to say Roos is not to be pigeon-holed.

In addition to his single ‘Dunkelheit’, Roos released an official music video. Produced by SabAh and Tie Esz One, the video has a dark, gritty, and raw feeling, at least from what I saw. I was unable to watch the video in its entirety because of the lighting effects. Please note that this video uses strobe-like light effects that can cause seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. View discretion is advised.
