Ronnie White – Lies & Desire (2023)

For approximately one decade, singer-songwriter and producer Ronnie White has navigated the waters of the UK music scene. Initially an up-and-comer newbie in this sonic ocean, now an established act making waves, White is the self-proclaimed queen of “what genre is this?”. In 2015, White introduced her music to audiences with the well-received singles ‘Temple’ and ‘Demons’…then she stepped away from the solo life. Continuing to perform with acts like Lunar Echoes, White gained notoriety in the experimental group. Sadly, Lunar Echoes dissolved in 2019; however, silver linings and all that, we heard White return to her solo project in 2020 and she hasn’t looked back since.

Alright, the brief biography is over, let’s get to the meat of this review – ‘Lies & Desire’.

Following her single ‘Lover’, ‘Lies & Desire’ is Ronnie White’s first release in two years. Initially supporting a darker, grunge-inspired style with her debut releases, White’s new sound is lighter and a step towards the unknown. While there is an eclectic, commercial pop tone to ‘Lover’, ‘Lies & Desire’ takes the electropop element one step further.

Filled with electronic beats, the melody can be described as experimental, eclectic and futuristic. Seriously, if Judy Jetson were to head off to a club, ‘Lies & Desire’ would probably be the song she jumps about to! Toe-tapping and upbeat with a seriousness flowing through the track, the single is rather atmospheric and moody; however, there is a bright sprinkle of higher-pitched beats sparking energy from every chord. Light but dark, soft but sparkling, futuristic but nostalgic, ‘Lies & Desire’ leans towards the sound of the 90s but with a modern-day flair.

While the melody itself can intoxicate listeners and can be placed next to Calvin Harris on playlists, it is White’s vocals that add something special to the track. Bold and confident, the vocals layer a heartfelt tenderness to ‘Lies & Desire’. Interestingly enough, despite being whimsical with vulnerability dripping from her voice, the execution also has a harsh, “in your face” attitude to bite at our heels.
