Romain Gutsy – In The Moonlight (2024)

At a very young age – age 4, to be exact – Romain Gutsy discovered his destiny after begging his mother to purchase an electric guitar he saw in a music shop near his home. She relented, and so burned the fire of musical passion in young Gutsy’s breast. As the years progressed, he began taking classical piano lessons, but his musical journey to rock stardom found Gutsy missing glasses to play the guitar pretty much wherever he could. Skip ahead a couple of decades and the France-based singer-songwriter stands tall without qualms or reservations turning heads internationally. The latest addition from his solo project is ‘In The Moonlight’.

Romain Gutsy crossed our virtual desk a couple of years ago with his 2022 single ‘If You See Her’, and today he continues to explore the intricacies of romance with ‘In The Moonlight’. Following his well-received track ‘Eloisa’, Gutsy drifts across the sonic river of folk tapping into a bold rush of indie-folk. Interestingly, while ‘In The Moonlight’ tips at nostalgic 70s folk, there is a contemporary edginess whispering in the melody. Threading familiar but fresh sounds, Gutsy showcases how timeless music eloquently captures the complexity of ageless themes like romance.

Joined by Eric Roux and Mat Leppanen, ‘In The Moonlight’ is a silvery haze of guitar, steady drums and percussion carrying one along a wistful stream of music. Yes, these sparse melodies can be simplistic and whimsical, but this is not necessarily the case for ‘In The Moonlight’. Tapping into the provocative, poetic, rather devastatingly heartsore lyricism of Leonard Cohen, Romain Gutsy ensnares your senses with barebones honesty. For me, the slip of jazz saxophone peeking near the end embellishes the track with obscure flair upping the ante.

Weighty and powerful in its rawness, but with a sense of confidence and calm, ‘In The Moonlight’ oscillates between tragedy and triumph with ease. Speaking about the single, Gutsy explains:

“’In The Moonlight’ was borne of a dream. How would you describe love in a few pictures dream, with a moon in the background, the shadow of the night around you, the gentle wind gliding over the leaves and the skins, and a tremendous attraction between two beings? That’s ‘In The Moonlight’”
