Rogue FX – Retrobution (2022)
With his second release, Rogue FX is bringing a blast of 80s synth pop to our ears in the aptly titled ‘Retrobution’. Using a slightly quirky sound, he blasts retro electronic beats into a wave of bass and synths sure to take you back in time. Hitting all the right nostalgic buttons, the single will have you merrily dancing to the sound of yesteryear.
While Andrew Wood, the man behind the music, is not a newcomer to the music scene, he is coming off a fairly long hiatus to bring us his retro sound. After starting his musical career in the late 80s with the group Please, he moved on to the house music band, Bass Value, in the mid-90s. When the band wound up, he moved away from music before the creative juices started flowing earlier this year, leading to the creation of this musical project.
‘Retrobution’ has a slightly futuristic vibe to the opening that warbles into a retro electronic pulse. There is a really interesting mixture of past, present and future in the melody that shines through the use of synths and the deep beats. Through all of this, a dance vibe makes its way into your senses, getting you moving to the neon lights of the melody. Across the verses, there is a retro vibe that makes you think of dances and clubs of the past. As the melody heads to the chorus, a rise in the synths brings the touch of futuristic notes, with a blink of electronics. It is a really engaging melody that has you moving from start to finish while casting your mind back in time to the 80s. The nostalgia that it pumps into your veins is wonderful and leaves a happy sparkle in its wake.
Against the retro synth tones, there is an echoing robotic vocal line that enhances the futuristic touches of the track. The main vocal line has a light echo to it like it is calling out to you from inside an electronic box. This bolsters the synthwave vibes of the track, before moving into a light disco vibe. The performance takes the best elements of retro pop to take you back to the 80s and fills you with a retro revolution. His vocal performance is rather catchy on its own as it leaps off the sparkling synths tones of the melody.
Rogue FX takes your mind back in time with the retro synths tones of ‘Retrobution’ for a dance through some vintage neon lights. The single has you dancing to the retro sound from the first note to the very last. There is a great mixture of past, present and future in the single that makes it all the more engaging.
