Robert Vendetta – Here And Now (2023)
When we left Robert Vendetta, he was enchanting us with his double-sided single ‘Without You (Quiero Quedarme Contigo)’. He began with toe-tapping indie-rock but we ended up being serenaded by a true romantic weaving his magical piano ballad around our hearts. Skip ahead a couple of years, one album and a couple of singles, and Vendetta drags us back to his world of music with ‘Here And Now’.
Following the well-received song ‘Vacation’, ‘Here And Now’ is Vendetta’s second single after a two-year hiatus – or at least a break from releasing material. Shifting to a softer, more soothing tone in ‘Here And Now’, Vendetta shows his sensitive, gentle side as compared to the upbeat ‘Vacation’. Intimate and intense, Vendetta’s obscure vocals capture your heart while he ensnares your senses with the charming piano. Proving simplicity can be beautiful, this piano-vocal combination is as kaleidoscopic as any toe-tapping pop song.
One intriguing aspect of ‘Here And Now’ is the incorporation of a band in the record. While the single is piano-driven with the comforting ease of a love song, the prominent piano and raw vocals are carried by a river of drums, bass and mellotron. Anders Jansvik’s drums flit in with a steady pace as if it were a pulsating heartbeat. Havard Solli’s mellifluous bass harmonically binds with Torunn Christell’s mellotron inserting a soothing sensation beneath the bold vocals. A sliver of backing vocals by Jansvik, Christelle and Norwegian artist Janos offer a slight haunting chilling your skin but as they combine with Vendetta’s rich tones, it steals your soul.
Given the sound of ‘Here And Now’, I might say it is a love song. It might be melancholic with raw vulnerability like James Blunt’s ‘You’re Beautiful’; then again, I might be incorrect. Vendetta explains that ‘Here And Now’ was penned after receiving advice from a friend to stop looking ahead and live in the moment. A slight melancholy slivers through this single but its beauty truly makes us stop and take a look around in the here and now.
