Robert O’Connor – Summer Is Waiting (2023)

For just over 15 years, singer-songwriter Robert O’Connor has been entertaining audiences with his toe-tapping, smile-inducing, heart-pumping music. From his early days with indie-pop ballads to stronger pop bangers, heavier alternative pop vibes and now a synth-pop inspired chillwave tone, Robert O’Connor has gone from one end of the spectrum to another. Over a decade ago, he might have been considered new and fresh; however, his maturity and experience as an artist bring something sophisticated, timeless and heartwarming to his music. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Summer Is Waiting’.

From RGM to Retro Pop and Lost In The Manor, Ireland-based Robert O’Connor has been described as having superb songwriting skills mesmerising audiences with sonic masterpieces. Following his single ‘Separate Ways’, and the remixes thereof, ‘Summer Is Waiting’ captures the essence of warm summer nights in brightly coloured pop wrappers. Retaining a strong electropop tone with synth-wave vibes, one can easily become lost in the warm sonic whirlpool but not too lost that you can’t travel along at a calm, mellifluous pace. I find this particularly intriguing as ‘Summer Is Waiting’ was penned with the aim of capturing the heart of warm weather and bringing its light to dismal, dark days.

“I had two conversations with two friends in a 24-hour period. Everyone was feeling a bit down in the dumps and I wanted to say to them ‘summer’s right around the corner, everything will seem better when the sun is shining’, so in a way, it’s my seasonal affective disorder anthem!” – Robert O’Connor on ‘Summer Is Waiting’

Reconnecting with producer Gareth Shortland, who has worked with artists like Sophie Ellis Bextor and Erasure, ‘Summer Is Waiting’ is hot off the mixing desk to be enjoyed by audiences across the globe. In my opinion, summer is no longer waiting but I’m damned glad I have Robert O’Connor playing in the background on these languid days.
