Robbie Rapids – April’s Gonna Rain (2022)
Already hitting our virtual desk once this year, Robbie Rapids is a sonic whirlwind of diverse sounds swirling about your head. Referred to as a type of “jangly pop-rock”, the US-based singer-songwriter draws together elements of rock, pop and indie in his music. His collaboration with singer-songwriter David Levene brings more diversity as they fuse over 40 years of experience into 4-minute-long songs. The latest addition to Robbie Rapid’s well-received discography is the single ‘April’s Gonna Rain’.
Nostalgic, reflective and insightful, ‘April’s Gonna Rain’ was written about one of Robbie’s work colleagues from years ago who was engaged to be married. For some reason (and I don’t mean that in a sarcastic way), April (the woman) entrusted Robbie with her concerns, fears and emotional issues letting out all her drama – this is what ‘April’s Gonna Rain’ is all about. Robbie shares that the song talks about “showers, flooding the town, and you even hear a thunderstorm at the end”; however, it is more a unique sonic expression of the intense drama felt by both April and Robbie. I think even the thunderstorm at the end is a good representation of fear, angst and inner turmoil.
Following his track ‘Adolescent Lover’, ‘April’s Gonna Rain’ is a powerful guitar-driven track with an old-school melodic arrangement. Robbie shares that his favourite part of the single is David Levene’s guitar solo; however, I’m not too sure if I agree. For me, the harmonic combination of powerful guitars, pounding drums and Robbie’s rich vocals are my favourite part. Like shimmering threads, the guitar, drums and vocals run through the kaleidoscopic sonic tapestry. Even more, I adore the 70s rock sounds fusion with contemporary indie-rock adding edginess to the outstanding single. Profound, engaging and toe-tapping, Robbie Rapids reaches into your soul and sets it soaring on dark clouds in ‘April’s Gonna Rain’.
