Rob Wolf – Better Man (2024)

Nashville, the land of milk and honey when it comes to country music, welcomes newcomer singer-songwriter Rob Wolf. With his new single ‘Better Man, the Montana native is looking to join the ranks of fellow musicians, including two of the legendary Highwaymen,  Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson, who have headed down to Tennessee to immerse themselves in its vibrant music scene.

‘Better Man’ is solid in its delivery, a rhythm that is so smooth it subtly tracks and carries through with little effort. The inclusion of Bruce Bouton’s steel guitar and Jenee Fleenor’s fiddle is a triumph, leaning into the musicality we have come to associate with the genre. Yet, Wolf’s vocals are the star of the show with his own classic country sound. With ‘Better Man’ Wolf could be held amongst the ranks of Tim McGraw and Keith Urban, as the song embodies the essence of country but with the universally appreciated polishedness of a great pop song.

With such crisp vocals, you can comprehend the emotions he felt while writing this track. I loved Wolf’s description of the song: “This is a beautiful song about gratitude and what the love of a good woman can do for a man.” Bringing profoundness to the song, Wolf hones in on how finding the right person can bring the best out of us even if it takes them to see the worse in us before that can happen – a sentiment so eloquently emphasised with the line, “And I know that it’s going all to plan because she makes me a better man”. Sometimes it’s as simple as that to know something is right.

Using his experiences growing up in the West as inspiration for his music, ‘Better Man’ is a great example of how this intimate approach can deliver some truly heartfelt music. Joined by studio musicians Tyler Cain (electric guitar), Jackson Eppley (bass guitar), Bruce Bouton (steel guitar), Jenee Fleenor (fiddle), and production with Tyler Cain and mixing by Mark Lonsway, ‘Better Man’is emotionally gripping and filled with sentiment. With the hope of a brand new album in early 2025,  I’m looking forward to hearing more in the future from this talented singer-songwriter.
