Roam Like Ghosts – The Weight (2025)

Describing their music as “emoacana” – a combination of folk, indie and Americana – Roam Like Ghosts dare to dive beyond the pedestrian leaping into an eclectic innovation. Formed in 2017 by long-time friends Matthew Daugherty (vocals) and Bucky Fairfax (all guitars), the US-based duo drew together their musical experiences, stylings and influences as Roam Like Ghosts. In 2018 the duo became a trio as Bobby DeRosa (bass) made an appearance – only technically a full-time member in 2023 –  adding a certain weightiness to their sound. We came across the band in 2021 when it was only Daugherty and Fairfax, DeRosa being a feature for live performances; however, today we’re looking at their single, ‘The Weight’.

Recorded, engineered and produced with Dick Hodgin at Osceola Recording Studios, ‘The Weight’ brims with duality in all aspects. Style-wise, ‘The Weight’ is a jump back to the 60s and 70s folk-rock scene; however, a modern-day indie-folk edginess keeps it fresh. Production-wise, ‘The Weight’ is sleek, sophisticated and elegant; however, a sense of vulnerability lingers in its underlying gruffness.

Shimmering as a bright sonic tapestry, each instrument (including Daugherty’s vocals) adds a particular spark to the single. A bold bass shimmers with bright blue light, while the soaring guitars glitter in a bright red shine. The drums peep with softer green hues and the vocals zig zag across like a silvery ribbon. Kaleidoscopic, while still keeping a simplistic ambience, ‘The Weight’ is a mish-mash of sound and emotion.

Finding the place where language no longer makes sense – the place where music communicates and only sound is understood – Roam Like Ghosts captures the core of human essence and spirit. When it comes to ‘The Weight’, the band explains:

“As we grow older, we all start to face our own mortality and start to reflect on life and what our greatest joys, biggest regrets and/or mistakes that we’ve had or made. ‘The Weight’ is about those things that end up grinding you down, weighing you down, and that all you can hope for is that those you loved know that through it all that you loved them.”
