Ricky Montgomery – Superfan (2024)
Life can always get in the way, but true passion often prevails leading individuals back to their paths; this is the case with Ricky Montgomery. Hailing from St. Louis, the US-based singer-songwriter was an adolescent playing in basement bands before the viral explosion prompted a short music career – this was all a decade ago in 2014. At this point, life intervened, and Montgomery turned his back on music… but it’s not so easily dissuaded. Today, he shares his natural musical talent with the masses to “document my long, awkward path toward remembering myself as an artist…” The single ‘Superfan’ is a recent addition to this journey.
Adopting a unique eclecticism in his musical concoctions, Montgomery combines genres from folk-pop to indie-rock, pop-rock and alternative rock with a desire not to be pigeonholed, and he certainly isn’t. Following his well-received 2024 album Rick(y), ‘Superfan’ presents another facet to Montgomery’s musical persona.
Recorded and produced with Tommy English and Jeremy Hatcher, the track blends elegance and charm with raw emotion and innocent whimsy – all bundled in a sophisticated wrapper with a golden ribbon. While the track is full-bodied with drums and guitars delicately weaving about the listener, there is a simplistic sheen clinging to the kaleidoscopic soundscape. Perhaps this is the rawness of Montgomery’s vocals with its folk-pop tone enhancing the stillness, calm and tenderness of ‘Superfan’.
An odd duality exists in the new single, like barebones honesty within a sonic whirl of music; however, it is not only the melody teetering between two pillars. Lyrically, ‘Superfan’ explores the tragedy and triumph of the online music industry. Montgomery explains:
“’Superfan’ is my case for fighting against the ‘TikTok-obsessive’ culture that has held the music industry hostage since 2020. This is my first independent release since 2016, and even though the Internet as we know it feels like it’s dying, we don’t have to go down with it.”
In addition to the single, Ricky Montgomery released an official music video for ‘Superfan’. You can view the video below or on his YouTube channel. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
