Rick Treffers – My Wishful Singing (2024)
With over 30 years in the music industry, Rick Treffers might be considered a veteran artist with lots of experience, influences, stories to tell and advice for the younger generation. Yet, while the name has some mileage, Rick Treffers is as exuberant as any new musician. Known for his dream pop band Mist, formerly Miss Universe and Girlfriend Misery, Treffers toured across Europe, South America and North America sharing his music with the masses. Wavering from dreamy pop to classic rock and slides of folk along the trail, the “Flying Dutchman” calls to audiences of all preferences, all generations and all countries. After Mist’s disbandment in 2017, Rick Treffers continued his musical journey as a solo artist.
Following his well-received singles ‘Hang On’ and ‘Perfect (In Our Dreams)’, ‘My Wishful Singing’ is Treffers third release in 2024 and the next track on his upcoming album The Opposite of Never. A shapeshifter regarding genres, we hear degrees of rock and pop in previous material; however, 2024 leans further to folk-inspired tones. Interestingly, as a lilt toward folk is heard, The Opposite of Never dabs into various folk sounds and styles weaving a shimmering tapestry.
Combining the folk-rock ‘Perfect (In Our Dreams)’ and the mournful pop ballad of ‘Hang On’, ‘My Wishful Singing’ incorporates the sensitivity of a ballad with an upbeat rock-tinged sound, all bound in a soulful sonic wrapper. Reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac crossed with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, vintage folk emerges; however, Treffers’ genuineness, authenticity and originality give the single a unique vibe.
‘My Wishful Singing’ is one to enjoy and adore, particularly with its flowing rhythm of Treffers’ vocals and guitars, Ivar Vermeulen’s upright bass and keys, Jeroen Luttikhuis’ bass guitar, Rafa Estrela’s drums and samples by Jordi Sempere. Yet, it is not only the melody that connects with listeners but the profound, intimate lyricism as well. Treffers explains:
“The song was written at the start of a promising love affair when there was still light and hope, long before the final breakup. This is reflected in the music and the lyrics. In the end, it’s all about believing in love and keeping the flame alive, whether it’s real or not… It’s what we need in these chaotic and difficult times.”
