Richard Green – A journey (2022)

Featured on numerous Italian blogs and magazines, Richard Green’s music has been referred to as a sound that “…meets the modern fruit of his musical evolution.” (Il Mohicano). In his interview with The Soundcheck, Green mentions that his influences range from Red Hot Chili Peppers to The Beatles. Moreover, The Soundcheck also refers to his EP A journey as “five instrumental songs where classical music meets modern creating a unique and captivating experience for the listener.” Come with us as we dip our toes into this classical but contemporary EP.

Drawing together his natural talent as a musician and composer with pianist Irene Veneziano and the Archimia string quartet, A journey is a five-track fusion of traditional classic sounds with soul, pop, jazz and tinges of folk. A classical EP, there are no vocals on the EP; however, this lack of vocals does not decrease the beauty of the album at all. In fact, an absence of vocals enhances the kaleidoscopic sound of each track ranging from the opening track ‘A song’ to the closing ‘Sea of memories’.

One element that I adore in A journey is how the arrangement has a strong complexity, yet simultaneously boasts a barebones starkness to touch the soul. Each track tells a specific story with the composition taking us on a rollercoaster ride from soft, soothing sounds to bold, robust and hard-hitting tones. Veneziano’s piano is prominent in each track with the string section weaving itself through the melody like a shimmering thread. Yet, as there is a glorious joviality to many of the songs, the sound is far more profound traversing feelings of joy, pain, loss and utter bliss.

To some people, each of the tracks might seem “samey” without any true definition between the five songs. The thing is, while there is a similar arrangement in some of the songs, it is to enhance the flowing nature of the entire EP. Green explains that “all the tracks are connected and even the playlist has a logic behind…there is a lot of art in this music project and music and colours or images are strongly connected in my opinion.”

Richard Green has noted one of his favourite tracks as ‘Sea of memories’ as it is “…the most nostalgic track on the EP and this is what I wanted to represent the end that every one of us is going to face sooner or later…” My favourite song, however, is not ‘Sea of memories’ with its nostalgic flair, but ‘Midnight’ with the obscurity of the piano and strings evoking intricate emotions.

Sincere, sentimental and intriguing, Richard Green, Irene Veneziano and Archimia create a tender EP to send your soul soaring leaving you absolutely smitten with their music.
