Rhineland – Halifax (2022)

Known for their engaging melodies, energetic live shows, polished music and sophisticated sound, US-based Rhineland is a firm favourite among audiences on the East Coast. Hailing from Virginia, the band infuse a folk meets indie-rock style with their diverse background and experiences. While this is my introduction to Rhineland, the lads are turning heads across the globe by featuring on Indie Obsessive, Indie Music Center, and alexrainbirdMusic to name but a few. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Halifax’.

The first release following their 2021 album, Heard It In A Dream, Love, ‘Halifax’ has a slight grunge feeling to the melody. Combining soft guitars and drums beneath hushed vocals, there is a nostalgic flair to the single. Yet, while a leaning toward the 90s rock sounds exists, a contemporary obscurity is evident enhancing the edginess of the track. Recorded in central Virginia with friends from Vacation Manor, ‘Halifax’ is a heartfelt, tender and charming song.

What I find intriguing about ‘Halifax’, beyond the wistful tones and hazy ambience, is how it is simultaneously haunting and warm. As if they are embracing you in a big sonic hug, Rhineland draws you close to share intimate childhood memories. The thing is, it may be a warm hug but a sliver of vulnerable poignancy is woven into the sonic tapestry. The hint of interspersed ukelele adds a cheekiness to the track that is smile-inducing and different.

As I mentioned, this is my introduction to Rhineland and I am completely intoxicated with their sophisticated sound. My one complaint about ‘Halifax’ is the length. Sitting at less than three minutes, the song is far too short! I cannot wait for more from this talented group.
