ReLoVe – Disposable World (2021)
Bursting into 2021 with a powerful and infectious sound, US-based quintet ReLoVe is making waves with its unique music. A collaboration of veteran musicians and producers, this new seven-song series from ReLoVe features multi-instrumentalists Glenn Jost and Hussain Jiffry along with bandmate producer Victor Bender. Alright, I could go ahead and list all the accomplishments of these musicians but that would take many, many, many more paragraphs. What we need to know right now is they have joined forces to produce genre-defying music with a controversial twist.
Performing throughout Southern California at city festivals, municipal parks and corporate events, ReLoVe is sharing its sound with a variety of listeners. Featured in FV Music Blog, RGM, Melodico Music, Music News Today, Dancing About Architecture, Roadie Music and on several radio stations, the group is also reaching listeners on an international level. The latest addition to the group’s well-received repertoire is the single ‘Disposable World’.
Not one to turn away from provocative content, ReLoVe plan to release a seven-song collection to “dig much deeper” into the fragility of the global climate. The first from this seven-song series, ‘Disposable World’ touches on topics of poverty, cancel culture, lust, fame, degradation, fear, self-loathing and inner turmoil – basically, it’s a framework of the sociopolitical structure we face today. Although, it sounds better than the dark mire of gritty material.
It’s odd, but ‘Disposable World’ makes me think of Disney’s fantasy film Alice in Wonderland. An immediate “sucking sound” followed by Jost’s steady drumming drags you into this alternate reality where you aren’t quite sure of your surroundings. As the melody continues adding a moving violin section, performed by violinist Leah Zeger, ReLoVe creates a hazy ambience within the enlightening scene.
As in Alice in Wonderland, ‘Disposable World’ is filled with twists, turns, interspersed contributions from characters, highs, lows and reckless melodic movements. Incorporating classical orchestral sounds with casual country-rock instrumentation adds a sonic representation of the organic and traditional meeting synthetic elements – a bit of a whirlpool and tumultuous river. Yet, while there are crescendos and diminuendos making ‘Disposable World’ infectious, a lingering introspection can be found with each note.
Just like Alice, you slowly identify the reality of the global situation noticing the bad, ugly and distressingly obscene. You notice the truth about the Walrus, the ridiculousness of the Mad Hatter, the haughtiness of the roses and the self-obsession of the Queen of Hearts. Pretty at first sight, but when you scratch the surface ReLoVe shows their true character. Furthermore, while the melody takes you on this enlightening journey, Jost’s rich vocals add an insightful reflection like the Cheshire Cat telling you where to go.
Bold, brash and brutally honest, but with a lingering sense of optimism and empowerment, ReLoVe show you what the world is without abandon. Yet, while there is nastiness, the group also points out optimism, free will and the positivity that comes with personal choices. We live in Wonderland, but we don’t have to be a part of the rat race. We can be Alice, make good choices, accept reality, but keep working to recreate that blissful field of daffodils.
