RedrumSociety – Stormy Weather (2022)

With ‘Stormy Weather’, RedrumSociety have created a single that is mellow yet carries an underlying bite of aggression. Using lyrics inspired by a verbally abusive relationship, the single explores the feelings of one party in a delightfully honest way. An undeniable indie-pop gem, the single makes fantastic use of layered harmonies, attacking guitars and depths tapped into by violins and timpani.

While the band originally formed in 2008 during high school, only Zach Cohen remains from the founding members. Over the years, the band has been through legal troubles, addiction and the passing of an original member. This track is the first release with the new line-up and brings an intense range of emotions that leads listeners to confront a rather difficult subject.

‘Stormy Weather’ creates an ominous feeling through the warbling tones of the opening. The opening is like an old black and white horror movie that turns into a more moving rock sound. The ominous tones remain in the lower levels of the track, while the modern rock tones get you moving to their rhythm. It is a really dynamic melody that you can’t help but move to. Everything increases in intensity as the chorus hits with a crash of drums that drops into a smooth swipe that leads you to the next verse. There are a lot of little melodic elements that creep into the soundscape throughout the track, adding textures and emotions to the single. While the music is undeniable in its moving flow, there is a light touch of mellow vibes in the higher levels that are met by the aggressive bite of the rock tones and vocals.

The vocals bring a confession to the single, through the opening verse. This turns into the initial bite of aggression as the vocals hit out at the other person in a verbally abusive relationship. There is a light growl to the vocals that works so well with the dynamic movement of the melody. As the blast of tones hits for the chorus, the vocals rise to match and pack a solid punch. The lyrics have a biting honesty to them that makes the exploration of the dark emotions in the track amazing to listen to. Every element of the track bolsters the other, making this a track that you can easily listen to again and again.

RedrumSociety have you rocking out to the dynamic movement of ‘Stormy Weather’ as they bring a bite of aggression to mellow overtones. The melody is packed with dynamic textures that play off each other and merge into a moving sound. The vocals bring a light growl to the honest confessional flow of the lyrics.
