Red Skies Mourning – Light of Mine (2021)
If Chris Cornell and Rob Thomas were to have a child, the chances are Red Skies Mourning would be it. The solo project of US-based singer-songwriter Chris Aleshire, Red Skies Mourning is a clash of alternative rock with indie-rock. After building experience in the music industry touring across the UK and US with previous bands, Aleshire is writing more sincere and sensitive material as a solo artist. Featured on Album of the Year, YMX, Less Than 1000 Followers and Roadie Metal (to name a few), Aleshire is reaching audiences on a global scale. The latest addition to his critically acclaimed discography is the single ‘Light of Mine’.
Following the sensitive single ‘How Can I Believe?’ (read our review here), ‘Light of Mine’ nods to the alternative rock sound of the 90s and 2000s. Lying somewhere between Foo Fighters, Soundgarden, Matchbox 20 and Three Days Grace, Aleshire embraces a ruggedness in his robust new track. Combining a powerful guitar with pounding drums, ‘Light of Mine’ plunges you into a sonic whirlpool setting your hair on end with its intensity.
While ‘Light of Mine’ has an alternative rock slant, Aleshire showcases his reputed guitar skills with a metal-influenced undertone and one very impressive guitar solo. The heavy riffs seamlessly intertwine with the smooth melody offering a rather harmonic result. Yet, while the melody itself is infectious it is Aleshire’s throaty vocals that add an intimacy to the track.
As with ‘How Can I Believe?’, the single oozes sentimentality, sincerity and raw honesty in its lyrical content. Touching on the fragility of humans, Aleshire exposes vulnerability, anxiety and confusion in the abstract search for meaning. The thing is, while he is “spinning in a daze”, the identification of an internal light adds lingering empowerment and hopefulness for the future.
