Reba – Spilt Feelings (2020)

Reba has taken the saying to not cry over spilt milk and turned it into her single ‘Spilt Feelings’. She has moulded the sentiments of this saying into a sassy anthem about confidently getting over someone after a breakup. There are some references to her older releases in the track, but it stands as a great introduction to her sound for new listeners.

With a throwback to the 80s, the track uses a pop synth foundation and echoing reverb to build up the sentiments of the lyrics. Her cheeky performance turns a moment that could be heartbreaking into an empowering shove that many people could use. Through her music, she lets you know that you can move on from someone who is no longer necessary in your life.

‘Spilt Feelings’ opens with a vocal snippet before some funky electronic tones come at you. There is a vintage vibe to the music before it gives way to a contemporary alternative pop flow. The popping electronic tones get your head moving while the guitar edges into your senses with a funky flow. It is an interesting combination of electro-pop tones with funky guitars that come together for a rich and textured soundscape. You can easily get lost in the music because of the depth and lush feeling it has.

Reba’s vocals are a sultry layer over the melody as she paints a vivid picture of a breakup in the lyrics. Her delivery is a sassy comeback as she addresses an ex and really puts them in their place. The direction of the lyrics changes on the chorus as she pumps you full of empowerment and confidence to move on with your head held high. Laced between the lyrics is a sipping sound that just adds a nonchalance to the vocals like she couldn’t be bothered to stop drinking a milkshake to talk to her ex.

Reba gives you the confidence to move on after a breakup in the sassy anthem ‘Spilt Feelings’. The single combines electronic tones, funky guitars and cheeky vocals for an empowering and engaging lift. The addition of sipping sounds just adds a little something to the music that gives it a cheeky edge.
