Realma – Down The Railway Spine (2024)
Previously catching our eye with her singles ‘A Hint Of Pink’ and ‘Ashgrey Butterfly’, singer-songwriter Realma finds the delicate line between ordinary and experimental, then blurs it. A Serbian Chinese songstress, Realma has been described as otherworldly, transformative and post-modern. With her hypnotic smile and moving sound, Realma transports audiences to another plain of existence where your dreams and demons manifest in bright sonic colours. Come with us as we delve into her most recent release, ‘Down The Railway Spine’.
While her intriguing smile and alluring eyes captivate you, it is her eclectic music that reaches into your soul and has you floating away. Following her well-received single ‘Last Breath’, Realma dips into contemporary dream pop with the synth-driven single. Soft and gentle, she leads you through one hazy forest to another with a light-hearted pop style. Yet, just as you feel comfortable in her presence, ‘Down The Railway Spine’ breaks into haunting melancholy driven by Realma’s wistful vocals. Interestingly, an obscurity exists in her vocal execution sauntering from whimsical hushed tones to a stronger, confident and bold sound. It is this innovative nature that lifts Realma above other artists.
Not necessarily a sonic whirlwind, but definitely something in that realm, ‘Down The Railway Spine’ expresses an ebb and flow of emotion. Inserting the orchestral instrumentation alongside the synth-pop offers intricacy within hazy chaos. Tackling issues of PTSD with a personal narrative, Realma not only captures audiences with her sound but lyricism as well. She explains:
“‘Down The Railway Spine’ delves deep into my innermost dystopian moments dealing with PTSD. The lyrics and the music both describe those dark times when I’d been fighting a whirlpool of emotions in episodes of mental deterioration. Yet, there is also a heroic undertone to the track, something undefeated, where I address those pieces of us that remain courageous… more than just a song where I try to slash my own internal demons, it’s something I’d like to dedicate to all those battling trauma too.”
In addition to the single, Realma released an official animation music video for ‘Down The Railway Spine’. You can view the video below or via her YouTube channel.
