Realma – Ashgrey Butterfly (2022)
The musical alter-ego of an independent Chinese/Serbian polymodal, Realma merges cultural diversity with an ethereal ambience. As if from another world, the Serbia-based musician invites you into a surreal state of being with whimsy, wistfulness and fairy-like fascination. Featured on notable press like Rolling Stone India, Indie Music, Music Crown, Less Than 1000 Followers and various playlists, Realma is reaching audiences on an international scale. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Ashgrey Butterfly’.
Following her track ‘Wandering’, ‘Ashgrey Butterfly’ is Realma’s first release in 2022 – at least according to Spotify. In line with her psychedelic and soulful sound, the new track paints a whimsical scene in which you can lose yourself. Yet, while there is a leaning toward Enya in the wistful quality of ‘Ashgrey Butterfly’, a vibrant brightness is heard and felt in the melodic arrangement. Bold, powerful and otherworldly, the single is easy to listen to with a twinkling sensation – thanks to the combination of synths, piano, strings and percussion.
While the melody has you walking through a haunting sonic forest, the lyricism clashes with the upbeat “Disney vibe” of ‘Ashgrey Butterfly’. Touching on issues like social burnout, depression and loneliness, Realma connects on an intimate level with her audiences. She explains that “…fundamentally, the lyrics depict a very personal, endlessly uncertain struggle on how to find one’s place when always feeling out of place. Perhaps the metaphorical juxtaposition between ashen butterfly and colour-obsessed bees found here is somewhat Dickinson-esque in the sense that the poet utilised similar nature motifs with tones of melancholy in her ever-questioning poetic space of solitude”
Sincere, heartfelt and tender, Realma takes you on a journey through orchestral beauty and painful reality in ‘Ashgrey Butterfly’.
