Ray Johnson – Isn’t That True (2025)

With a continuous burning passion to create music, music is inextricably woven through Ray Johnson’s soul. He began his musical journey at age 6 by singing in the choir, and the guitar entered his life a few years later. In high school his dedication to the guitar and vocal ensembles grew leading to his first cover band, then a second cover band after college, and if we skip a few years, a solo project. Stoking the flames of music, Ray Johnson uses his poetic lyricism, moving melodies, and powerful performances to intoxicate audiences. Join us as we delve into his single ‘Isn’t That True’.

Taken off his fifth album, Other Times and Other Places, ‘Isn’t That True’ follows the well-received singles ‘Winter Night’ and ‘Half A Chance’. Recorded and produced with Dave Bieritz, ‘Isn’t That True’ walks through various realms of rock with slices of blues, folk, and classic rock woven in a sonic tapestry. Soaring guitars match a bold bass with steady drums lingering. A keyboard shimmers along in its glistening sheen, while percussion tinges the edges. For me, however, it is the piano that offers a teetering between haunting eeriness and soothing comfort.

Melodically, the instrumentation is a cross of vintage rock with contemporary edginess; however, it is the retro sound that breaks through with poignant depth. Johnson’s gritty vocals binds the melody in a silvery band but still saunters along with profound tragedy. Given that the song is a rhythmic expression of inner turmoil, conflict and addiction, vulnerability and melancholy seem typical. Then again, solace exists as Johnson holds your hand navigating the dark despair.

Sincere, sentimental, a little dark, but also flitted with light, ‘Isn’t That True’ is a moving melody with powerful meaning. This song is from his critically acclaimed 2024 album; I cannot wait to explore more tracks and await new releases with anticipation.
