Raven Shelley – Do You Miss Me Yet? (2022)

From Yorkshire Magazine to RGM, Volatile Weekly and East Portland Blog, UK-based singer-songwriter Raven Shelley is reaching audiences across the globe. Growing up in the south of France, Shelley immersed herself in English literature at a young age inspired by the beauty of Shakespeare and Hardy. It is from this love for literature that she derived a passion for poetry and, eventually, began expressing her emotions through music. She shares that “…to write something real, you have to pour yourself onto the page and into the songs.”

Following her well-received single ‘Sink In Solitude’, ‘Do You Miss Me Yet?’ is a powerful sophomore single solidifying Shelley’s place in the UK music scene. With only two singles to her name, the artist can be considered a newbie in the industry; however, she has experience performing as part of a band and now as a solo artist.

Described as having an ethereal nature, it seems fitting that her music has a surreal ambience to its sound. Similar to ‘Sink In Solitude’, ‘Do You Miss Me Yet?’ has a pop meets indie-folk style. Yet, while the debut track has a wistfulness, ‘Do You Miss Me Yet?’ has a greater poignancy in its simplistic soundscape. The acoustic single elegantly combines piano, drums and acoustic guitar in a heart-warming melody. The thing is, while the melody is soothing with a soft lilt, the lyricism hides a harder, angrier and pissed-off attitude.

Reminiscent of Kate Bush in both sound and style, Shelley brings an edginess to modern-day folk. What I really love about ‘Do You Miss Me Yet?’ is how she lures you in with a soothing melody and retains that smoothness while stringing angst through the sonic tapestry. Poetic, powerful and elegant, Raven Shelley may be new on my radar, but she is definitely staying there for as long as possible. I recommend her to anyone searching for something sophisticated and eye-opening.
