Raleÿell – Burn (2023)

When we left Raleÿell, she calmed our minds, bodies and souls with her 2021 single ‘let them stare’. Skip ahead a couple of years and the UK-based singer-songwriter tackles the significant emotions heartbreak brings. Known for tackling issues of mental health in her songs, Raleÿell uses melodies to heal and help audiences. Despite having only a few singles to her discography, Raleÿell has not only turned our heads but featured on various blogs, playlists and radio stations thus reaching out to connect with audiences internationally. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Burn’.

Re-emerging after approximately a two-year break in releasing music, Raleÿell returns with her 2023 singles ‘Lullaby’ and ‘Burn’. Reputed for her versatile style, she has been noted as fusing elements of indie-pop, RnB and alternative rock in her music – something that gives her a genre-diverse edge. In ‘let them stare’, Raleÿell ended 2021 with a synth-driven alternative pop single; however, ‘Lullaby’ and ‘Burn’ see her shifting to a darker, heavier, goth-rock-tinged melody. Perhaps an evolution in her sound?

Penned to reflect the rollercoaster of emotions felt after losing a loved one, ‘Burn’ carries us on a journey from fragile vulnerability to resilient empowerment. Opening with a haunting synth-based melody, the broken side of loss is evident. Chilly, raw and filled with a mystical fearfulness, the beats punctuate the air with an eerie ambience. Yet, while there is a darkness in the hazy soundscape, a crescendo to bold beats and hearty tones gives a more optimistic and positive influence. Along with the rise up to a hopeful and empowering instrumentation, Raleÿell’s obscure vocals add elegance to the rise and fall.

Instead of being a mere synth-driven pop song, a sliver of gothic sentimentality flits through ‘Burn’ accentuated by a piano behind the gut-wrenching beats. Finding a delicate line between organic and electronic, Raleÿell has a play from vulnerable despair in the synths to bright resilience in the acoustic addition. Perfectly encapsulating turmoil and eventual triumph over diversity, Raleÿell helps us heal with ‘Burn’.
