Rags and Riches – Smoothie (2023)

With the aim of bringing optimism, hope and inspiration to a generation of dreamers, Kentucky natives Tanner and Peyton Whitt reach out with their high-energy brand of alternative pop. From their blasting debut single ‘Speed of Sound’ in 2019 to their album Always Gold in 2022 and singles ‘Hello, Goodbye’ and ‘holiday.’, the dynamic US-based duo have captivated listeners across the globe. Along with their features on Pop Dust, Atwood Magazine, American Songwriter and Vents Magazine, the lads intoxicate audiences with their energetic performances. I mean, who doesn’t love the opening act for Smash Mouth, Fitz and The Tantrums, and DURRY. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Smoothie’.

Hot on the heels of their track ‘Brave, Bold & Free’, ‘Smoothie’ is the ultimate summer banger capturing the heat, hype and chilled-out groove of the ideal summer. Filled with bright pop bops, the infectious single has you hooked from the very first note. Pounding drums meld with bold guitars slathering you with a hard-hitting feast of late-90s/early-2000s pop/pop-rock music. With a reminiscence to the Jonas Brothers, ‘Smoothie’ can get your toe tapping; however, for me at least, Tanner’s gruff vocals and Peyton’s ferocious drums bring a sheen of Smash Mouth and Blink 182 to the mellifluous melody.

Penned in collaboration with DeMarko Murphy (who helped write ‘holiday.’), ‘Smoothie’ is ultimately a love song – a tribute to Tanner Whitt’s wife Ariana. Tanner explains: “I wanted to write a song for my wife. We recently got married in November 2022 and she has been with me since 2016. I figured it was time to show some appreciation and wanted to write something fun and full of energy instead of a ballad”. Well, he hit the nail on the head with this bright declaration of being in love.
