Radio Vision – Mother Mary’s Homemade Marmalade (2023)

Beginning as the brainchild of singer-songwriter Ben Stephenson, Radio Vision is “the future with vintage flair”. First introduced to us earlier this year with ‘First Contact’, Stephenson set off on cinematic psychedelic-infused alternative rock in a solo act. After adding new seats to the table, Radio Vision has become a foursome featuring Derek Keller (bass), Haji Habiju (rhythm guitar) and Brandon Mervyn (drums). While Stephenson and the others have notable experience in the music industry, Radio Vision could be considered a newbie on the scene – but they are more than minnows in the sonic pool. From France and Germany to Brazil and the UK, Radio Vision has received rave reviews on an international scale.

Following their singles ‘Detour’ and ‘Faux Business’, the lads share a psychedelic fusion of blues and rock in ‘Mother Mary’s Homemade Marmalade’. Recorded and produced with regular collaborator Dakotah Haken of New Level Productions, the new single oozes retro psychedelic rock dragging us back to the sounds of the 60s and 70s. Yet, while old-school The Doors and Pink Floyd are evident in ‘Mother Mary’s Homemade Marmalade’, the retro sounds of Radiohead and Depeche Mode sliver throughout. Nostalgic whiffs from various decades spanning time, space and speakers.

While the melody sets you adrift on a kaleidoscopic trip, there appears to be an anchor in Mervyn’s drums and Keller’s bass. Stephenson’s bold guitars meld with the harmonic hooks of Habiju flowing off as a mellifluous fusion of everything, as well as a powerful guitar-driven presence. The one thing that truly tosses you back to the days of yesteryear in a psychedelic swirl is Stephenson’s vocals. Gruff and gritty but with a soothing smoothness slathered atop. Spin everything together and you have a song suitable for the Hair soundtrack.

Just as ‘Mother Mary’s Homemade Marmalade’ has a groovy vibe you can become lost in, profoundness lurks beneath the surface. Radio Vision explains:

“’Mother Mary’s Homemade Marmalade’ is a reality check, a tragedy and narration of domestic bliss gone sour in a way many can relate to… This song is about getting too comfortable and coming to terms only at the point of self-destruction.”

Sincere and introspective but with the mind-altering vision of “Oh what the hell does that matter”, Radio Vision release their intriguing single ‘Mother Mary’s Homemade Marmalade’.
