Rachel Davie Lee – Love Is In The Air (2021)

Coming from Guyanese and Scottish descent, Jamaica-born and UK-raised Rachel Davie Lee has a diverse background that contributes to her musicality. So, who is Rachel Davie Lee, I hear you say. Let me introduce you to this intriguing character.

Embracing her natural musical flair at a young age, Lee played the piano and violin from a young age, as well as beginning singing as a teenager. She furthered her skills when attending St. Andrews University where she was trained as a classical vocalist at the Department of Music. Moving on, she performed within operatic and chamber ensembles; however, it was contemporary music that drew her attention after a move to Glasgow. Emerging herself in the Glasgow music scene, she began exploring and developing her talent and the rest is history.

Now you have a basic understanding of Rachel Davie Lee, let’s get to what we’re here to discuss – her original music.  Featured on her debut EP Barely Concealed, ‘Love Is In The Air’ has received critical acclaim from international blogs, radio stations, and won a Modern Soul Music Award. With her eclectic musical style and interesting poetic lyricism, I’m surprised it isn’t on the tips of a global audience’s lips – or perhaps it is.

Influenced by Sade, Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys, Roberta Flack and Michael Jackson, ‘Love Is In The Air’ is a combination of classical music, soul and jazz. Bringing an old-school jazz sound ala Sade, Lee has a sassiness and sexiness within her melody; however, a modern-day edginess is heard within the ballad that easily places it within contemporary soul songs.

An intoxicating combination of jazz-inspired drums, guitar and piano, we see (or rather hear) Lee’s classical influence melding with more modern sounds. While the melody can send your soul soaring, it is Lee’s obscure vocals that really intrigued me. Somewhere between Roberta Flack and Sade, there is an intense intimacy with a smooth off-beat tone – it’s different but unforgettably fantastically different.

Sincere, genuine and hypnotic, Rachel Davie Lee has your skin tingling with her track ‘Love Is In The Air’.
