Rachael Sage – The Other Side (2023)
A musician, actor, producer, director, visual artist, dancer, author, and who knows what else, Rachael Sage has been captivating audiences with her poetic carpe diem attitude to life. The New York native recorded her debut album, Morbid Romantic, just under 30 years ago but she began sharing her natural talent for the arts far earlier than 1996. Growing up listening to Billy Joel, The Beatles, Buddy Holly and George Gershwin, Sage embraced music at a young age and by second grade she was performing original songs (something to keep the bullies distracted). Skip forward a few decades and you have an award-winning songstress who has released 15 albums, performed across the globe, worked with notable industry professionals, and even composed material for dancer and actress Maddie Ziegler. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘The Other Side’.
Following her well-received single ‘Whistle Blow’, ‘The Other Side’ is another tender offering from the US-based songstress. It is difficult to categorise Sage in a single genre but a tinge of folk floats through ‘The Other Side’. Retaining the haunting vocals we hear in ‘Whistle Blow’, Sage once again sends shivers down our spines with her obscure voice. Interestingly, while a sense of haunting wafts from the dulcet tones, a sense of warmth and richness oozes from Sage as she leads you through a kaleidoscopic sonic forest.
Standing alongside Vanessa Carlton with her piano-driven acoustic single, Rachael Sage inserts a whimsical rawness to ‘The Other Side’. The thing is, just as the folk-pop ballad exists with tender innocence, the sophisticated insertion of interspersed horns and guitar brings up the rear with jazzy sentimentality. Showcasing her versatility, diversity and eagerness to create something Rachael Sage-y, the elegant arrangement takes you on a heartfelt musical journey.
The personification of carpe diem and taking on all opportunities, Rachael Sage is an inspiration to audiences of all ages and ‘The Other Side’ is the theme song. While an empowering and optimistic track, this single was born of rather difficult circumstances.
“When I wrote ‘The Other Side’ I was separating from someone I still loved very much while a family member had just been diagnosed with a serious illness requiring me to be fully present to help them through it… The world seemed to be burning, but the grace of friends, loved ones and a beautiful creative community I found in upstate New York carried me through…”
Sincere, sentimental and filled with a heartfelt desire for “peaceful liberation beyond a time of crisis”, ‘The Other Side’ is another triumph for Rachael Sage.
