R.F. Coleman – I Couldn’t Trust (2022)

An artist in all senses of the word, singer-songwriter R.F. Coleman has tried his hand at writing, painting, filming, photography and now music. Previously a features writer for the New York Post, Guardian and VICE, as well as having photographs published by Canon and directing award-winning short films, R.F. Coleman has a portfolio to be proud of. Much to our joy, he is adding “musician” to his resume. Come along with us as we dip into his debut single ‘I Couldn’t Trust’.

A collaborative project between R.F. Coleman, co-writer Joshua Moriarty and co-producer Scott Horscroft, ‘I Couldn’t Trust’ is a bit of an eclectic song – much like Coleman himself. Dipping into funk, indie-rock, power-pop and new-wave genres, ‘I Couldn’t Trust’ has a kaleidoscopic feel about it. Put most succinctly, listening to this single was like stepping into a psychedelic spiral of music. The thing is, while you have your head spinning with bright lights flitting before your eyes, ‘I Couldn’t Trust’ has a warm tenderness about it. It’s like being wrapped in a comfortable blanket as you spin about in a multi-coloured bag of smiles.

Groovy vibes with a retro style, R.F. Coleman brings old-school sounds to a modern-day audience. Yet, while the song is a nostalgic sigh to yesteryear, a contemporary edginess exists making it completely fresh – familiar and fresh, I suppose. Interestingly enough, the accompanying music video seems to capture the essence of the song but it’s far more profound than the ethereal tune. Telling the tale of his “…transition from a wild man to sober artist”, ‘I Couldn’t Trust’ has an intense intimacy with layers of vulnerability.

Sincere, sentimental and heartfelt, ‘I Couldn’t Trust’ explores human fragility with its poetic style. I can easily say R.F. Coleman is one of those sparkling gems in a pool of pebbles and it’s impossible to ignore his glimmer.
