Quiet Tongues – This Water Is Wet (2022)
Fierce, formidable and entirely unforgettable, UK-based Quiet Tongues lodged themselves in our memory with their debut track ‘Ennui’. Long story short, we liked the lads, we like their music, and they are a melodic force of nature. Yet, we are not the only ones singing their praises. From Thoughts Words Actions to CLOUT, Info Music and Pillar Artists, Quiet Tongues captivates audiences across the globe.
Technically formed in 2018, Seth Tonkin (guitar and lead vocals), Jack Ewins (guitar), Daniel Nunan (bass) and Domokos Wootsch (drums) established themselves in the London music scene as Modra Luna. A couple of years later, the foursome took time during the pandemic to re-evaluate their sound and now we have Quiet Tongues. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘This Water Is Wet’.
As with ‘Ennui’, there is a diverse influence in ‘This Water Is Wet’ merging elements of indie-rock and alternative topped with tinges of indie-pop. In ‘Ennui’, there was a mild funk thread woven through the single; however, their sophomore single appears to have a more rock-inspired sound. Filled with dazzling guitars, pounding drums and Tonkins’ rich vocals, Quiet Tongues toss you into a sonic swirl heading one million miles per minute. Interestingly enough, while you twirl about at a dizzying pace with kaleidoscopic lights flitting before your eyes there is also a harmonic flow to carry you along the melody.
Navigating melodic gymnastics with elegance and sophistication, Quiet Tongues lures you in with the dreamy ambience. The lads share that while the song began in a hazier flow, it quickly turned into something bigger becoming a chaotic stream of consciousness. They explain that ‘This Water Is Wet’ is “…about being on the cusp of a breakdown, feeling the burnout, and the only thing keeping you together is clinging onto a belief or something that you believe to be true and holding onto that as a comfort.”
