Queen Bitch – Turn The Lights Down (2024)

The Covid-19 years taught us many things: the need for personal space (and masks), the fear of a global pandemic, the frustration of vaccinations, and that pyjamas are the most comfortable clothes to wear all time, any time. People turned inward and things became complicated, but Queen Bitch proved a shining light rising from those ashes with a massive grin. When singer-songwriter Róisin Bohan bought her first guitar, enrolled in music lessons, and began creating original music… well, a star was born.

Despite her shyness with original performances, Bohan (performing as Queen Bitch) developed an infectious presence making her a prominent force in the Dublin music scene. In 2023, she released her well-received debut single ‘Bones’, and the hits keep on coming as a year later she shares her new track, ‘Turn The Lights Down’.

Following the critically acclaimed tune ‘Peaceful Feeling’, ‘Turn The Lights Down’ once again has Queen Bitch leaning toward the iconic grunge tone of The Cranberries but a strong distinction lies in Bohan’s voice as she belies gruff grittiness with smooth slivers of silvery indie-rock.

While a signature sound brews within Queen Bitch’s music, eclecticism and versatility exudes with each passing track. ‘Peaceful Feeling’ was a softer wall of 90s alternative rock tones and ‘The Last Time’ flushes with nostalgic hard rock; however, ‘Turn The Lights Down’ highlights the temptation of old-school grunge and indie-rock in a unique slide of obscurity.

Recorded at Beardfire Studios with Rohan Healy, Al Quiff and David Virgin, Bohan’s ‘Turn The Lights Down’ is an intimate, intense and intricate melody. A sensational expression of raw emotion connects with audiences. Yet, as it is raw there is sophistication and elegance lingering in the production. Moreover, a hush of innocence and youthfulness teeters along a mature line of all-consuming enchantment.

So, all in all, what are my thoughts on Queen Bitch and ‘Turn The Lights Down’. In a word: astounding. That’s it, just utterly astounding! I can’t wait for more from this talented musician.
