Pylon Heights – The Arizona EP (2020)
In 2016, friends Jon Sandman (keys, vocals, trumpet, drums) and Chris Crowther (guitar) formed Pylon Heights. Their debut single was written in the extreme heat of Sandman’s attic room but was only released in late 2019. Adding this single to their new music, they have released The Arizona EP.
The common thread through this EP is the people you meet on your travels. These interesting characters are the ones you know you will never forget.
The first track on the EP is ‘A Song For Sarah’ which captures the sights and sounds of Oktoberfest where Crowther met Sarah. The track looks at the brief but immediate connection you can have with someone you have just met. The smooth and soulful melody of the track draws you in to set the foundation of the story. The vocals and lyrics set out the tale and are easy to listen to. The guitar riffs have a great atmospheric vibe to them.
‘Arizona’ is a tender track full of acoustic guitars and swelling brass notes. This track looks at fleeting love which is highlighted by the fluttering drums. The vocals on this song are gentle and nestle you in the lyrics. While this subject matter could be depressing, there is something uplifting to this track that leaves you feeling hopeful.
‘Lighthouse’ has a very chill feel to it that transports you to the seaside with an old lighthouse sitting on the rocks. The gentle notes of the track draw you in while the almost whimsical melody makes you smile and captivates. The chorus of the track is catchy and you might find yourself singing along. The vocals are a delightful combination of deeply atmospheric and floating.
The last track on the EP is ‘Outro’ and is the shortest song at just under two minutes. This instrumental song is a wonderful way to close the EP and incorporates everything the band has to offer. There are mesmerising notes that weave around you head, a great build-up in tone and a gentle echoing end.
Pylon Heights uses The Arizona EP to take you on a trip down memory lane and to places far and wide. The four tracks each have something special to add from the tale of Oktoberfest to the writhing notes of ‘Outro’. Each song is a pleasure to listen to and together make for an unforgettable EP.
