Proklaim – THIEVES (2023)
With a reputation for hard-hitting melodies interwoven with poetic lyricism to capture hearts and stir souls, Proklaim reaches audiences with profound intensity. When we last heard Proklaim, the Namibia-based musician shared a nostalgic whiff of Tupac with hints of RnB in ‘REASON 2 BELIVE’. This was my introduction to Proklaim, but he has already turned heads on a global scale with coverage from various music publications, playlists and radio stations. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘THIEVES’.
On the heels of his well-received singles ‘REASON 2 BELIEVE’ and ‘LOVE HIGHWAY’, ‘THIEVES’ sees Proklaim head on a tangent from his traditional hip-hop sound. A silvery trap flavour wraps about the bold vocals; however, the backing vocals and chorus bring reggae sensibility with its toe-tapping riddim. Interestingly enough, while the traditional rap meets reggae, the teetering ‘THIEVES’ is infused with Latin vibes within its all-consuming ambience.
While the catchy combination of synths, bold beats and a hint of percussion can send you floating along a mellifluous sonic river, ‘THIEVES’ is far more profound. Touching on uncertainties in reality, Proklaim uses his poetic lyricism to answer the existential questions of what is right, am I crazy, is this normal? When speaking about ‘THIEVES’, Proklaim explains:
“It’s a soulful song made on a beautiful beat… [that] gives commentary on life and society. Its intrinsic message is clear couple with a unique cadence.”
Collaborating once again with Florida-based producer Lu Diaz, ‘THIEVES’ transcends time, space and genres reaching professionals on different continents. Proklaim might be influenced by Tupac, Nas and Drake but there is an original authenticity and innovation to his music.
Sincere, sentimental and filled with brutal honesty, Proklaim turns inwards to express the impact of the external world in ‘THIEVES’.
In addition to the single, Proklaim released an official lyric video for ‘THIEVES’. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
